Tracing a front end metallic clunk and pretty much narrowed it down to the links. Can feel the the slightest play and noise when moving them up and down by hand. Got the right one off in an hour, the upper nut was just spinning so had to cut it off. The upper boot was cut wide open so It's bad for sure. What brand is preferred here? Avoiding the $50 ones from the dealer. There are like 8 different brands on Rock Auto and some brands even have two versions, economy and premium. Trying to avoid the made in China like Mevotech and MAS but don't know where the others are made.

I ordered Moog Problem Solver Greasable ones. They have a zerk fitting so you can fluff them up annually with fresh grease. And yeah, stock one had to be cut off.

I was looking at those but passed just because they WERE greaseable. Didn't see the need to add a maintenance item the car never came with when the original part was good for over 100,000 miles. Just ordered the MAS brand for $42 total after reading some good reviews.

It's been my experience that when they get old, the grease dries out and they start creaking/making noise. If they aren't greasable, you replace them.

I have put these on other cars I've owned, love them, if they start making noise you pump them up with a grease gun instead of cutting them out, ordering new ones, and replacing them.

Ordered and installed some of the cheap aftermarket ones.

Less than two years later, ALL the boots are split open on the pair.

Never again.

Not a recommendation, but the opposite: if you're ever looking at Beck/Arnley's reboxed OE-replacement ones, and they say "Made in Taiwan," run away. I had a pair that split the boots after three weeks in the hands of a mild driver in well-taken-care-of streets. I find that with Beck/Arnley, quality for everything except ATF pan filters and timing cover gaskets is directly related to country of manufacture. Made in Japan? High quality by OEM manufacturer (e.g., Sankei/Triple-5 for LCAs and ball joints) or reboxed OE part (like the rear mount bushing I ordered for an ES300). Made in Taiwan? Garbage, except for the aforementioned ATF screen filters...simple enough that it's almost impossible to screw up. BUT: timing cover gaskets that are "Made in Japan" by Nitto are garbage, don't stick at all compared to OEM gasketing foam.

The Moog Problem Solvers are an excellent holdout in a market saturated with cheap Chinese crap. I avoid them for the same reason, don't want to deal with greasing (since I'm installing on other people's cars), but I might try them on mine when I go through the two sets of OEM links I got from Majestic are done (so, in 20 years :)).

Look, to be clear, I am NOT saying you need to grease them annually. You could, when you were changing your oil, my whole point was that if they start to squeak, you literally spend less than 2 minutes giving them some fresh grease, instead of replacing them.
